Blessed to be able to serve alongside Pastor Deborah Butler at Hope
Lutheran Church in El Sobrante, California on Ash Wednesday, 2016. It's an
incredible experience to look into the eyes of so many, and declare their
mortality.
At the Communion rail, we encouraged folks to pick up a
stone, feel its weight, its shape...and deposit it in the waters of your
Baptism, allowing Christ to wash away the heaviness we so often carry.
The oil mixed with the ash made from the Palm Sunday fronds
of last year.
"Remember you are dust,
and to dust you shall return."
And yet...
Pastor Kathryn Gulbranson preached a beautiful
message at PLTS that morning, too, that included an additional reminder:
"Remember you are beloved,
and to love you shall return."
To dust and to love. Amen.
